Drive to Zuni Land, or more precisely to Zuni. Here Bed & Breakfast is the order of the day. The only time on the tour. Actually I didn’t want to go here, but the direct way to Page would have been simply too far and therefore still a stopover.

First of all a box with already worn out laundry at the post office give up. 10kg says the good woman, that makes then 92$ to Germany. OK, better than throwing away and also better than 40$ per kg overweight. So, let’s go, at least we get a nice package from the USA right at home. Value of goods indicated with 0, let’s see what customs says about it…

On to Zuni, so address entered into the Garmin GPS and off we go.

First over the I-25 direction Soccoro. Boring… Except once, there was a break

in “Truth or Consequences“. Yes, this place really exists. Used to be called Hot Springs and then they renamed themselves after some TV show.

Truth or Consequences

In Soccoro turn onto US-60. Many slightly dilapidated houses in the small towns. And most importantly, lots of open space. Briefly interrupted by the use of a radio telescope array.

The towns are getting smaller and smaller and there is no more gas in the area. In Quemado we go on the Highway 36 direction Fence Lake and there always further to the north.

Unfortunately, at the moment no gas in Quemado (memories are awakened, but this time there is enough in the tank), but if there were some, it would be really very cheap.

On haber route the great Garmin device reports “Turn left”. This is done after a short hesitation (because if not, then still 60 miles, otherwise only 12 miles).

Sand track, good, training for the approach to the Wave. After a good 12 miles and several “recalculations” because of impossible to get through, is to turn around. The minivan can’t make it. An oncoming Zuni is laughing his head off. But still, seven more miles and the Inn at Halona is coming. He is not able to judge whether it can be done with the minivan. So we turn around and head back to Highway 36.

In the end, even the 60 miles turns out to be a shot in the dark, because there are only 32 left. Arrived at the destination, first of all great amazement. A corner store in Zuni (which also supplies the whole town with bread), is the guesthouse. Very nicely furnished rooms and above all very nice people. They are from France and got this going as a pension. The people have also written several times to the various GPS operators and also sent coordinates, in vain.
