The cloud forest Fanal is an extraordinary location. At about 1100m altitude there is first a clear view, then clouds rush through and everything is enveloped, shortly after, the clouds are gone again. This is very impressive. If the cloud phase lasts a little longer, you can easily get lost there…

Madeira – São Lourenço
Only a few satisfying sunsets were granted to us. Most of the time all high clouds disappeared in the evening and the sky was completely clear. In the evening after the Levada hike we drove to the peninsula São Lourenço and looked which side it should be at sunset. First we went to Ponta do […]
Madeira – Levada do Alecrim
On Wednesday of the first week we went on the way to our levada hike. On the way there a short stop at a viewpoint on the ER110. Shortly after the intermediate stop we reached the parking lot to the Levada trail. First you have to walk on an asphalted road to the “Casa do […]
Madeira – Monte
Above Funchal, on the way to Pico do Arieiro, is the suburb of Monte. Here, as in other places, the remains of the devastating forest fires of 2106 are still visible.
Madeira – Porto Moniz (1)
Porto Moniz was often part of the route or destination on the various tours. During the day, there are a lot of day tourists there, in the evening, one hardly finds a restaurant that is still open. The town has only 1700 inhabitants, so no wonder. If you take the road from Porto Moniz towards […]
Madeira – Pico do Arieiro (1)
We visited the third highest peak several times. The island makes it easy for us. A road leads directly to the summit. Up there a military (?) radar system is installed and unlike in other countries the area outside the radar dome is freely accessible for tourists. Several hiking trails lead from Pico do Arieiro […]
Madeira – Funchal (2)
The famous doors of the old town of Funchal. These door paintings from the Zona Velha are even subject of postcards. But in reality this is not that great. You can, but you don’t have to see it. Overall the tugboats from the local restaurants are very nasty, as they all ask if you don’t […]
Madeira – Ponta do Pargo
Ponta do Pargo is at the south-eastern tip of Madeira. Beside the Farol Ponta do Pargo we had also planned a side trip to the waterfall “Garganta Funda”. At Ponta do Pargo lighthouse was first overcast sky. The waterfall was now not necessarily a highlight, rather poor. This is probably due to the dry weather. […]
Madeira – Funchal (1)
A few impressions from this year’s holiday. First of all three panorama images of Funchal. The city itself is not the best place to be, but somewhat nice. Due to the extreme hillside location, one has a nice overview of the city in many places. From the Parque Infantil “Pico dos Barcelos” one looks in […]
Planning Madeira: Long Trips
Below are the planned day trips. Some of the locations might get combined, depending on time permitted. Also, we might revisit some of the locations during the stay. Daytrip #1: Ponta de São Lourenço This will take us to the Ponta de São Lourenço, a nice peninsula at the east side of the island. The trip will […]
